Air Purifiers: Do you need one?

Air Purifier

We’re always looking for ways to improve the air quality of our home.

Outside of the au natural option (check out our post about best air purifying plants here), portable air purifiers have been all the rage for improving air quality lately. But are they really worth it?

Here at Armadillo, we like to do the research about home maintenance for you. So we did a deep dive to see if home air purifiers do what they claim to do: clean and then recirculate purified air in a space.

Air Purifiers: Yay or Nay?

First of all, here’s how portable air purifiers work: they draw air in through a filter, trap the particles/gases/odors/contaminants, and then re-circulate the purified air back into the room.

Based on our research, when used effectively, filtered air purifiers can help improve air quality in your home by removing contaminants like dust, pollen and pet dander. But according to the Environmental Protection Agency, purifiers are most effective when used in conjunction with regular household maintenance like:

  • Ventilating your home – we’ve discussed this before, open the windows!
  • Considering the humidity in the home and either humidify/dehumidify as needed
  • Manage and course-correct the source of contaminants that might be in the air. “Clean up” your cleaning products (by swapping to nontoxic options) and keep up with regular vacuuming and dusting
  • Making sure the house is staying regularly cleaned

So, how do you pick the air purifier?

To make sure you’re getting the best value for your air purifier, it’s important to consider these four factors to choose the right air purifier to accommodate your household air needs.

1. Know which contaminants you’re looking to clean outta the house! Dust, pollen, and pet dander are common options

2. Know the dimensions of the area you want to clean (portable air purifiers are designed to filter the air in a single room)

3. Know the capabilities of the air purifier you’re considering. This includes the type and number of filters they use, the percentage efficiency rate, the amount of clean air they deliver (high CADR is what you’re looking for), and the contaminants that specific purifier targets

4. Know your filters. The most important variable in the air purifier is the filter. We’re confident the best choice to filter particles is a purifier with a HEPA filter
