Fire-proof your (holiday) Home: Fire Prevention Tips

Amidst the festive decorations, cozy gatherings, and elaborate holiday feasts, it’s crucial to prioritize fire safety in the home during the holidays. With these quick and simple precautions, you can help ensure this holiday season remains merry and bright without the risk of fire hazards.

Mindful Decorating Choose flame-resistant decorations, and keep them away from heat sources such as candles, fireplaces, and heaters. Opt for LED lights instead of traditional incandescent lights, as they emit less heat and are more energy-efficient.

Responsible Candle Use Never leave candles unattended, and place them in stable holders away from flammable materials. Consider using battery-operated LED candles (we love these) for a safer alternative that still creates the same atmosphere.

Proper Christmas Tree Care If you opt for a real Christmas tree, keep it hydrated by regularly watering the base. A dry tree can become a fire hazard, so keep it away from heat sources and turn off decorative lights when you’re not at home or when going to bed. If you prefer an artificial tree, make sure it’s labeled as flame-resistant.

Safe Electrical Practices Avoid overloading outlets and power strips, and inspect lights for frayed wires or other damage before use. Turn off decorative lights and unplug them when you’re away from home or overnight to reduce the risk of electrical fires.

Cooking Safety Stay vigilant while cooking, never leaving the stove unattended, and keep flammable items, such as kitchen towels and oven mitts, away from heat sources. Have a fire extinguisher within reach and ensure that smoke detectors are in proper working condition. We also think these fire suppression blankets are a worthy investment.

Smoke detectors Make sure your smoke detectors are in working order and replace batteries if needed. This is a super quick checklist item. Don’t sleep on this one!

Be prepared for an emergency Accidents happen. Be prepared by having an emergency plan in place. Make sure everyone in your household knows how to use a fire extinguisher or blanket and where emergency exits are located.
