How to check for mold in your home, right now

Big bad mold is a common problem that can affect any home. From potential health issues to damage to your property, early detection is crucial.

But don’t be alarmed – be empowered!

Here are some signs to look out for and methods to help you detect the presence of mold so you can then take the necessary steps (with the help of a professional) to eradicate it and maintain a safe and mold-less environment.

1. Surface Level Visual Clues: The most obvious sign of mold is the presence of visible patches or discoloration on surfaces.

You’re looking for black, green, or brown spots, which will most likely be found on walls, ceilings, floors, and other areas prone to moisture. Pay special attention to areas near windows, in bathrooms, kitchens (especially under your sink!), and basements, as these are common mold breeding grounds.

2. Water Leaks and Moisture: Like all other ‘sinister’ and sneaky things, mold thrives in damp environments, so stay vigilant for water leaks or excess moisture.

Check for water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors, as well as peeling wallpaper or bubbling paint – these signs may suggest hidden moisture problems, which could mean potential mold growth behind these surfaces.

3. Condensation and Humidity: Excessive condensation on windows or moisture on walls can create an environment conducive to mold growth. Monitor areas prone to condensation, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or rooms with inadequate ventilation. Additionally, you can use a hygrometer to measure humidity levels in your home. Ideally, indoor humidity should be below 60% to prevent mold formation. Click here to order one!

4. Hidden Areas and Building Materials: Mold can lurk in hidden areas, making it challenging to detect. Furthermore, porous building materials like drywall, insulation, and carpets are prone to mold infestation.

We don’t always think about these areas of our homes, so make a list of your crawl spaces, nooks, and attics and regularly check through your list for visual clues of mold.

5. Musty Odor: Mold often produces a distinct musty or earthy smell. If you notice a persistent odor in certain areas of your home, it could be an indication of hidden mold growth. Follow your nose and investigate the source of the odor.

6. Air Quality Testing: If you suspect mold but cannot visually detect it, consider professional air quality testing. Certified mold inspectors can collect air samples and analyze them for the presence of mold spores.

7. Professional Mold Inspection: If you have even the slightest inkling, seek the expertise of a professional mold inspector. You’ll never regret spending that dough. These professionals have the necessary tools, knowledge, and experience to thoroughly inspect your home for mold, identify the source of the problem, and recommend appropriate remediation measures.

Remember, early detection is key to effectively addressing mold issues. If you know, you know. And now you know.

Next week, we’ll be covering what to do ASAP if you find mold in your home. Make sure to check back next Saturday!
