😷 How to Sanitize Your Home After the Flu: A Step-by-Step Guide

200 3

Well, it sure is flu season. And all-the-other-viruses-season. But once the worst has passed, it’s time to sanitize your living space to prevent the spread of germs and keep everyone healthy. Here’s how:

Start with Ventilation Fresh air is the best way to clear out germs. Open windows and doors to allow for proper ventilation. This step helps reduce the concentration of airborne viruses lingering in the air.

Focus on High-Touch Surfaces The flu virus can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, making it crucial to disinfect frequently touched areas. Use a disinfectant spray on:

  • Light switches
  • Door handles
  • Remote controls
  • Keyboards and tablets
  • Refrigerator handles

Wash Bedding and Towels Launder all bedding, blankets, and towels. Use hot water and a high-heat dryer setting to kill any remaining germs.

Sanitize Bathrooms Bathrooms are a hotspot for germs during an illness. Clean the toilet, sink, faucet handles, and any other touched surfaces. Use an all purpose disinfectant and disposable gloves for added safety.

The Kitchen Flu germs can transfer to kitchen surfaces easily. Sanitize:

  • Countertops
  • Refrigerator door handles
  • Microwave buttons
  • Cutting boards

Wash any dishes in hot, soapy water or run them through the dishwasher on a high-temperature setting.

Replace Household Items

  • Toothbrushes: Replace the toothbrush of the person who was sick to avoid recontamination.
  • Air Filters: If you have an HVAC system, consider replacing the air filter to improve indoor air quality.

Clean Soft Surfaces Soft surfaces like carpets, couches, and curtains can harbor germs. Use a fabric-safe disinfectant spray or a steam cleaner to sanitize these items.

Disinfect Toys If you have children, clean their toys and frequently used items thoroughly. Use a mild disinfectant suitable for children’s products or run washable toys through the dishwasher.

Don’t Forget Personal Electronics Smartphones, tablets, and other personal electronics are often overlooked. Wipe these down with a disinfectant wipe like alcohol wipes that are safe for electronics.

Practice Proper Hand Hygiene Encourage everyone in the household to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
