Squeaky Floorboards? Fear not 👻

giphy 1

Squeaky floors can be annoying, (and pretty creepy in a haunted house 👻), and they can be especially disruptive when you’ve just gotten the baby down to snooze.  But have no fear — there are natural, easy, and DIY-friendly ways to silence those creaks without the need for costly repairs or invasive techniques. Here’s a rundown of some of the best DIY methods to stop the squeak:

Identify the Squeak Source The first step is to locate exactly where the squeak originates. Walk slowly over the floor, listening closely for any noise. Mark squeaky spots with chalk or sticky notes, especially if you have a large area to cover.

Lubricate with Powder Using household powders is a simple, natural way to reduce friction between floorboards. Here are some effective options:

  • Baking Soda or Cornstarch: Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch into the cracks where the squeak occurs. Gently sweep the powder into the gaps, then walk over the area to work the powder further into the joints. These powders act as a dry lubricant, filling the small gaps that cause friction.
  • Talcum Powder or Baby Powder: This method works similarly to baking soda. Shake the powder lightly around the squeaky area and work it in with a broom. Talcum powder can be a great natural lubricant and is easy to apply.

Note: These powders might require reapplication over time, but they’re an excellent quick fix with no harmful chemicals.

Use Natural Wax or Soap If the powder method doesn’t fully silence the squeak, wax and soap are other natural options that work well on certain wood floors. Here’s how:

  • Beeswax: Rubbing beeswax on the squeaky joints and gaps can reduce friction significantly. Beeswax is natural, smells good, and is a durable lubricant that stays in place longer than powder.
  • Soap (Castile or Glycerin-based): Use a natural soap bar, such as castile or glycerin-based, and rub it directly onto the squeaky boards. It can lubricate the area and minimize squeaking without staining the wood.

Tip: Avoid using petroleum-based waxes or soaps, as they contain chemicals that aren’t ideal for indoor air quality or your wood’s finish.

Insert Wood Shims Wood shims are small, thin pieces of wood that can stabilize loose boards and prevent them from rubbing together. Here’s a quick method to try:

  • Insert a shim in the gaps where the squeak is the loudest. You can use a drop of wood glue to secure the shim in place if needed.
  • Once the shim is in place, trim any excess so it’s flush with the floor. This method works particularly well in situations where there are larger gaps causing movement.

Use Vinegar and Water Solution for Loose Nails Loose nails often contribute to squeaky floors. A simple solution can be a vinegar and water spray:

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, then spray lightly around any nails or screws that appear loose. Vinegar can help to swell the wood slightly, tightening its grip on loose nails.
  • Allow the mixture to dry completely. For a long-lasting solution, use this technique before installing additional screws or nails in the area.

Seal the Cracks with Wood Putty or Natural Caulk For more permanent fixes, you can seal cracks between floorboards with natural wood putty or an eco-friendly caulk:

  • Using a putty knife, apply a small amount of wood putty or natural caulk to any visible gaps where floorboards rub against each other.
  • Smooth out the surface and allow it to dry. These materials hold up well over time, adding stability to the floor and reducing friction.
