5 Small Appliances You’re Probably Forgetting to Maintain—and What To Do.

If we’re being honest, there are at least a couple on this list that made us cringe knowing they haven’t gotten much attention in our homes. So you’re not alone. Small appliances are the unsung heroes of the home—powering your mornings, speeding up meal prep, and keeping your living spaces clean. But we don’t often reciprocate. Over time, this lack of attention can lead to poor performance, weird smells, and even safety risks like fires or mold. The good news? A little regular maintenance goes a long way. Here are 5 small appliances you’re probably forgetting to maintain—and what you should be doing instead.

Coffee Maker (Drip or Single-Serve)

Why it’s often neglected: It looks clean on the outside, but the inside can be a breeding ground for mold and mineral buildup.

Maintenance tips:

  • Descale every 2-3 months with vinegar or a descaling solution to remove calcium deposits (Manufacturers like Breville often provide at least a packet or two of descaling solution to hold you over).
  • Wash removable parts weekly, including the water tank, carafe, and pod holder.
  • Leave the lid open after use so the reservoir dries out completely

Why it matters: Regular cleaning improves flavor, prevents clogs, keeps mold at bay, and extends the life of your coffee maker.

Toaster / Toaster Oven

Why it’s often neglected: Unless it’s smoking or burning toast, it rarely draws attention.

Maintenance tips:

  • Empty the crumb tray weekly. If your household loves toast, more often.
  • Wipe the interior and glass door regularly with a damp cloth or mild cleaner (once cool and unplugged).
  • Check heating elements for stuck-on food or debris. (Remove grate or roasting tray and wash with warm water and soap and let dry completely)

Why it matters: Crumbs can ignite and cause a fire. A clean toaster also cooks more evenly and efficiently.

Blender / Food Processor

Why it’s often neglected: A quick rinse feels like enough—but residue builds up fast, especially around seals and blades.

Maintenance tips:

  • Disassemble and thoroughly wash all parts after each use. This one is a biggie (that rubbery gasket on the lid is a breading ground for mold – ick!)
  • Inspect and clean blade gaskets regularly (look for signs of mold or wear).
  • Dry all parts completely before reassembling and storing.

Why it matters: Prevents bacteria and keeps your appliance performing like new.

Vacuum Cleaner (Including Handheld or Robot Vacuums)

Why it’s often neglected: It’s a workhorse, but most people forget the filter, roller, or canister even exist—until performance tanks.

Maintenance tips:

  • Empty dust bins or bags after each use. #must
  • Clean or replace filters monthly (more often if you have pets).
  • Remove hair and debris from brush rollers weekly.

Why it matters: A clogged vacuum loses suction and strains the motor, shortening its life.

Microwave

Why it’s often neglected: Unless there’s a mess inside, it gets ignored for long stretches.

Maintenance tips:

  • Wipe down the interior weekly. Use a steam-clean method with a bowl of vinegar and water.
  • Clean the turntable tray and rollers regularly.
  • Inspect the door seal every few months to ensure it’s intact and sealing properly.

Why it matters: A dirty microwave can harbor bacteria, cause uneven heating, and start to smell.

PS, Don’t Forget These!

  • Humidifiers — Clean tanks weekly and descale monthly to avoid mold and mineral buildup.
  • Air fryers — Remove and clean the basket and tray after every use.
  • Ice makers — Wipe down interior parts and run a cleaning cycle regularly.
